For 2020, we’re not only heading into a new year but also a new decade. For some homeowners, this presents an opportunity to spruce up the décor with new and trending products. Designers across the country have shared their ideas on the current trends with some simple ways to update your home this spring.

Go Bold… Maybe

The colour trend for interior walls is a crisp, classic navy blue. Navy is a striking colour that gives a bold contrast to any room. It can be used as an accent wall or paired up against crisp white or natural wood. Classic blue shades provide a stately appearance without too much risk of being an “over-the-top” colour. If a dark colour is too much, Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year is a soft, rosy hue called “First Light.” You can also pair this with blues and soft whites for a softer look. While it’s fun to follow the trends, ultimately, you have to be comfortable in your home and choose a colour palette that you love.

What’s Old Is New Again

Traditional details are making an appearance once again with vintage accents like spindles, gold and decorative trim. Interior designers are introducing a few statement pieces into a modern room and keeping the vintage accents to one or two key pieces only. The advice this year is not to create an “old” room, but add a bit of vintage flair here and there. Flea markets and garage sales are a great place to find that unique piece, or search online on buy and sell sites – perhaps an old trunk, kitchen chair with spindle legs, or an antique sideboard. Or, if you’re into art, start an antique art collection with a few unique paintings.

Art In The Kitchen

Speaking of art, the kitchen trend this year is to create a space that’s not just for cooking. Open shelves displaying sculptures or collectables, along with a few paintings, can breathe life into an otherwise mechanical room. If your kitchen needs a colour update, paint the cabinets and keep the walls neutral. Cabinet doors in bold colours like blue, yellow or dark red are all the rage.

Canopy Beds

For a whole new look in the bedroom, canopy beds are making an appearance in 2020. But forget the heavy drapery and chunky frames. Today’s styles provide a modern update with acrylic and metal frames and sleek lines that will fit in any size and style of bedroom.

The Year Of The Curved Sofa

A popular style in the 60s and 70s, the curved sofa is back with a sleek new appearance. Decorators are introducing accent pieces like a curved love seat or chaise. For a larger room, consider a curved sectional. These pieces may not be as practical since you can’t tuck them
into a corner, but they are great options for those who want to shake things up and try something new.

Black And White

Black and white never go out of style. The contrasting colours can be incorporated into
everything from contemporary décor to farmhouse chic. A powder room is a great place to try out this trend if you want to start small. Introduce black and white checkerboard tile,
crisp white walls and black faucets for a simple look. Have fun with hand towels by finding white with black writing or edging. For a larger bathroom, add a white stool with black rivetsand a black shower curtain.

Trends are fun to watch as they come and go throughout the years, but ultimately your decorating choices come down to your sense of style and taste, and your own personal touch.
